CELEBRATE OCCUPY

Occupy.com was born on April 1, 2012, with the publication of the Declaration of the Occupation, a document originally written and distributed by the New York City General Assembly at Occupy Wall Street in September 2011. Since the days of the Occupy movement, our media organization has continued to cover national and global issues through the lens of the 99%, focusing on political-financial corruption, climate change, police brutality, alternative movements for social change, and much much more. Through original reporting contributed by dozens of correspondents, from San Francisco to Athens, Sao Paolo to New Orleans, Manchester to Hong Kong, we have continued to shine a light, day after day, on the crucial economic, political and environmental issues that have led us to the precipice. Inequality has never been greater. Money has never had a stronger grip on our politics. Injustice and corruption infects us all. In response, we must all be part of the solution. Here’s to 5 years traveling the road of resistance with Occupy.com.

A JUST TRANSITION TO CLEAN ENERGY

ONE ANSWER LIES IN THE CREATION OF  SOLUTIONARY RAIL.  A CLEAN ENERGY PROPOSAL TO BRING CLEAN SOLAR AND WIND ENERGY FROM RURAL AREAS TO POWER RAILROADS AND BRING THIS POWER INTO CITIES.

Come and hear about it on Wednesday, Feb 8th at Village Books in Fairhaven, Bellingham

BOOK COVER

On Wednesday, Feb 8th at Village Books in Fairhaven, Bellingham, co-author Bill Moyer will present the Solutionary Rail proposal, answer questions on how we can electrify our nation’s railways, and help plug people into this visionary yet do-able project that helps us stand up for our bioregion and gives a positive alternative to the Pacific Northwest becoming a fossil fuel transportation corridor.

Solutionary Rail describes a people-powered campaign to electrify America’s railroads and open corridors to a clean energy future. Rail, unique among forms of mass transportation, can easily be electrified. Because electricity is increasingly coming from clean sources such as sun and wind, rail has the potential to serve as a clean and reliable form of transportation while invigorating communities along the way. The Solutionary Rail book proposes overhead rail electrification, powered by renewable energy accomplished in conjunction with track modernization. This infrastructural investment will bring to the United States the reliable, electrified, higher-speed service now common on public railroads in Europe, Asia and elsewhere.

Bill Moyer of Vashon Island WA, co-founded the Backbone Campaign in 2003 with friends from an artist affinity group. He has dual and intersecting paths as both an activist and artist. Backbone Campaign has been a vehicle for much growth and Bill has emerged as a leader in the theory and practice of “artful activism.”  He designs and produces creative political actions and provides training in grand strategy and creative tactics around the country.

Tim Robbins performs Eugene V. Debs Canton, Ohio speech June 1918

Tim Robbins performed this excerpt of Eugene V. Debs' 1918 speech at a May 2009 performance at the 92Y in New York City, as part of a celebration of the paperback release of A Young People's History of the United States. Here's what Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove wrote about Debs and this speech in their introduction in their book Voices of a People's History of the United States: "One of the most eloquent and uncompromising voices against war was that of Eugene Debs, the railroad union organizer and leader of the Socialist Party. On June 18, 1918, he addressed a mass rally of workers in Ohio, knowing very well that his words could lead, as they did, to his arrest and imprisonment. Speaking to the jury before it began its deliberations, he said: “I have been accused of obstructing the war. I admit it. Gentlemen, I abhor war. I would oppose the war if I stood alone.” He was found guilty by the jury of violating the Espionage Act, which made it a crime to “obstruct the recruitment or enlistment service.” His sentence of ten years was upheld by a unanimous Supreme Court. Here is the speech that led to his arrest, and then his statement to the court before sentencing."

WHAT WOULD OBAMA SAY?

THIS WORKS!

Seriously – Sara Bareilles and Leslie Odom, Jr.

We asked Sara Bareilles to imagine what President Obama might be thinking about this election and Donald Trump. She wrote this song, which Leslie Odom Jr. sings.
