This Labor Day (Monday the 7th) instead of taking the day off
We give you the opportunity to work for justice for farm workers and attend a Labor Day Picnic—A Day to Celebrate the Achievements of our American Workforce!

Action for Farm Workers:   8:30 am, meet across from Starbucks on Old 99 off of Cook Rd Exit

Labor Day Picnic:    Noon to 5 pm, Maiben Park, Burlington

Live the legacy of millions of workers that fought for the 8-hour day and a paid holiday for workers; La Lucha Sigue (the struggle continues) for farm workers and other low income workers in WA State!

Familias Unidas por la Justicia (FUJ) is calling on their supporters to come out and have a presence at Sakuma Berry Farm so the management of Driscoll’s and Sakuma Farms know that the community and conscientious consumers support the workers in this historic labor dispute that marked its second full year of struggle just recently on July 11th, 2015.

This summer members of Familias Unidas have stopped work on 4 separate occasions to attempt to negotiate lower production standards with management. Workers are tired of sacrificing their health to struggle to meet the minimum production standard required to meet the company’s $10 an hour minimum wage. While Sakuma’s PR firm tells the public that workers are earning 30 dollars an hour, the majority of the workforce is actually struggling to make $10 an hour and have been fighting valiantly for change.

Throughout July and August Sakuma has refused to negotiate lower production standards when workers initiated unfair labor practice work stoppages and at one point even sprayed pesticides with a helicopter right next to workers on work stoppage.

However during the most recent work stoppage Sakuma was forced to negotiate with Union Committee members in the field after community members called Driscoll’s and Sakuma offices about the dispute and joined workers in the fields to observe the work stoppage.

It is clear that Sakuma and Driscoll’s are feeling the pressure from the growing movement of support for FUJ, especially after this most recent week of action, and with only a month left of peak season, action is needed now to support Familias Unidas!

This Labor Day FUJ is asking you to take the holiday to come out to the farm and show Sakuma that support for farmworkers in the local community is strong and will continue to grow until workers have a legally binding union contract!

LOGISTICS

We will meet at the parking lot across from the Starbucks next to the Cook Rd exit at 8:30 AM sharp, where we have met for the last two annual marches, and then shuttle people to the processing plant.

(In the past Sheriffs have gotten everybody to leave actions by threatening to ticket everybody who parks on the shoulder of county roads.)

The parking lot is across the street from the Starbucks at 9660 Old Hwy 99 North Rd, Burlington.

It is a very long parking lot, so we will all meet at the section of it that is directly across from Starbucks.

There will be speakers and signs will be provided but your banners are welcomed!

Feel free to join us afterwards for the Northwest Washington Central Labor Council’s Labor Day picnic, Noon to 5 pm!

Picnic is located at Maiben Park, 1011 Greenleaf Ave, Burlington

There will be a Barbeque,  Music,  Games, and more.
