Sacred Responsibilities:
2015 Totem Pole Journey
“The ancestors expect it. The unborn demand it.”
It is an honor and a pleasure to announce that the Lummi Nation is inviting your community to participate in Sacred Responsibilities, the 2015 totem pole journey.
The totem pole journey is a collective effort of passionate communities across the region who stand in opposition to the plans of fossil fuel companies that threaten indigenous peoples and other communities across the Pacific Northwest.

Stand with First Nations against destructive fossil fuel projects.

This year’s totem pole journey will take place between August 21 and August 31. The journey comes at a defining moment for the effort to stop North America’s largest coal export terminal from being built at Xwe’chi’eXen, or Cherry Point, the ancestral sites and traditional fishing grounds of the Lummi Nation. The House of Tears Carvers of the Lummi Nation, led by Master Carver Jewell James, will offer the totem pole as a gift to the Northern Cheyenne people at Otter Creek, the proposed site of a massive coal mining expansion intended to serve the proposal coal terminal at Cherry Point.
The Northern Cheyenne are standing in resistance to this coal mining expansion. The totem pole journey is our opportunity to join the Lummi Nation in standing with them.
Please consider making a contribution to support this year’s journey. The House of Tears Carvers of the Lummi Nation as a gift to the Northern Cheyenne people, but your contribution will ensure that it gets there by helping fund gas, truck rental, and other critical expenses.
Thank you so much for your continued support of the Lummi Nation and of our shared community.
