Ellen Murphy will be the speaker
Participants will grapple with the duality, or false opposites, of social protest and higher consciousness. Protest, in the form of demonstrations, pickets, sit-ins, marches (walks) and such, means to testify (test) for (pro), and thus is fundamentally a positive expression for social justice and peace. The information and discussion will arise from sharing experiences in which the people were or were not trained and prepared in what Martin Luther King called “transphysics,” a certain state of mind, and what nonviolence practitioner Barbara Deming called “the two hands of nonviolence.” We will come to understand those concepts through discussion and practice, and perhaps to expand our knowledge and understanding of nonviolent direct action.
ELLEN was mentored by Jesuit activist priest Daniel Berrigan in Ithaca N.Y. in the 60’s, and many other nonviolence practitioners along the way. Ellen has deepened her practice of unifying activism and the sacred (sometimes called Sacred Activism, though she herself hasn’t used that term). Through the years, she has experienced sacred connections in difficult moments, with police officers, soldiers, guards, sheriffs, judges, prosecutors and jailers, and has grown in commitment to nonviolent direct action through these experiences.
