OIL TRAIN HEARING – WEDNESDAY
If you thought we only needed to be concerned about the proposed coal terminal at Cherry Point, think again! The current move to off load oil from trains (refined and possibly crude) from the Bakken oil fields and Tar Sands at our two refineries has been happening for the past year under our noses.

Oil companies ship 40 times more oil in outdated and dangerous train cars compared to just five years ago. This is a national problem. If you are worried about safety in our community, join us on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at 6:00 for a rally and then a public hearing.
State your opinion about this latest effort by the fossil-fuel robber barons to make their profits on the backs of the citizens of our community. We must insist on an EIS for this.

HONORING THE VICITMS OF LAC-MEGANTIC
Rise with Lac-Megantic to send the message: Keep Oil Off the Rails and In the Ground!
Thanks to Paul Anderson for this fabulous photos of the rally on Sunday to stand with residents in Lac-Megantic, grassroots activists across North America, and with ForestEthics, 350.org, Oil Change International and the Sierra Club. This memorial will be installed in a public location sometime in the hear future.
At a time when the urgency for climate action is at its greatest in history, we cannot fall into the oil industry’s distracting debates on the ‘best methods’ to transport fossil fuels. As our movement has blocked climate-killing pipelines across North America, big oil has moved at an alarming rate to transport oil by rail. Yet despite dozens of oil train disasters, the oil industry is seeking to dramatically expand oil by rail in the US and in Canada. Lac-Megantic’s struggle is a grim reminder to us all: Big Oil will stop at nothing to extract, transport, and burn every drop of oil in the ground. No matter the risk, no matter the cost to public health, safety, and the climate, the oil industry will jump at every opportunity to profit.
Now we say NO MORE.
No more exploding trains.
No more tar sands.
No more reckless endangerment of our communities and our climate!

PRIVATIZATION OF THE GED EXAM
OCCUPY BELLINGHAM has a lot on our plate. But who can pass up a new opportunity?
Our #6 demand says: Prevent privatization of all local public resources and services. (Our collapsed economy has forced local/state governments to sell off our resources and services, creating a nightmare of prison-industrial and school-industrial complexes).
Since the GED exam has changed and likely impossible for students to pass let’s start with this issue. Privatization of the GED seems to be a collusion between Pearson (testing company) the Gates Foundation (they brought WA state the charter school initiative) and our Federal Education Department (Arnie Duncan).
The speaker in the following video is Diane Ravitch. She is the leader of a group called Parents Across America. Her latest book s called “Reign of Error.” She spoke to a group of teachers n North Carolina on February 24, 2014. The video is 30 minutes long. It will be the best 30 minutes you ever spent.
At the end of this video, Diane correctly noted that the only real long term solution to this attack on our public schools is to stop voting for the lackeys of the billionaires. The only good thing about Common Core and/or the new 2014 GED test is that they are both so harmful to students that they might wake parents up and convince them to vote for someone different in the next election.
